EA 227 on a Worcester Bosch boiler means the boiler tried to light but did not detect a flame, so it has locked out for safety. On some displays it appears as EA with 227 underneath. You will normally have no heating or hot water until it is reset or repaired.
Common causes of EA 227
- A frozen or blocked condensate pipe, a very common cause in freezing weather
- No gas reaching the boiler, for example an empty prepayment meter or a closed gas valve
- A faulty ignition electrode or flame sensor
- A gas valve fault
- A fault with the boiler's control board
What you can check yourself
- Check that your hob or other gas appliances work. If not, contact your gas supplier or check your meter.
- Make sure the gas valve under the boiler is open.
- If it is freezing outside, check the condensate pipe. Pour warm (not boiling) water over the frozen section, then reset the boiler.
- Press and hold the reset button for about five seconds, then wait for the boiler to try again.
If EA 227 returns after one reset, stop resetting it. Repeated lockouts point to a fault inside the boiler.
When you need an engineer
Testing the electrode, flame sensing, gas valve and gas pressures must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. We repair Worcester Bosch boilers across Kent and carry common parts, so many repairs are finished on the first visit.
If you can smell gas, do not touch any switches. Turn off the gas at the meter, open windows, leave the property and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
Phoenix Plumbing & Heating is a Gas Safe registered team based in Maidstone, covering Kent with 24/7 emergency cover. Call 01622 585169 or book online and one of our engineers will find the fault and give you a clear price before any work starts.
